I wanted to show what the Contax G2 focusing speed and sound are like, recorded with my phone.. do note, you can hear how quiet the office is here, and therefore you hear the noise of my heater in the foreground :)
This is with the Contax G 45mm f2, the 28mm f2.8 is a bit quieter, while the 90mm f2.8 is the loudest.
Do notice i’m using the AF/AFL button located on the back of the camera, that’s because the half-press shutter doesn’t really exist on the G2, it is much easier to do the AF on the back first, then confirm the shot by pressing the shutter. This is nifty because the G1/G2 always focus back to infinity after every shot (thus all the action).
That being said, autofocus is actually very quick on this camera. It uses an active autofocus system (phase detection, like what’s used on most SLR’s) and infrared detection system which uses triangulation, when one system fails the other takes over and vice versa. It is a very comprehensive autofocus solution.
